Oftentimes sustainable practices such as transportation, climate protection, sustainable operations, waste reduction and recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, sustainable foodservice, and sustainable water systems aren’t taught to college students. This makes it harder for students to implement these practices into their everyday lives. However, my project seeks to challenge that problem by using an educational outlet that often goes unused. Social media can help actively engage students in sustainability education because of a student’s social media presence. Since college students use social media everyday, an academic institution could use this information as a means to educate students on sustainable practices. My project aims to inform students about sustainable alternatives through a social media campaign titled #sustainABILITY, which focuses on SUNY New Paltz’s sustainability efforts and how students can join in on it.
